The notion that areas of the tongue are exclusively responsible for different basic tastes is wrong. Although widely taught in schools, it was later concluded that the entire tongue can sense all tastes equally. Unless of course, that tongue happens to belong to a Tico.
Unlike other tongues, areas of Tico tongue are in fact exclusively responsible for certain taste. The Costa Rica Post recently tasked one of our interns with creating a schematic map and labeling each area of the Tico tongue according to the specific taste that it is responsible for detecting. So without further ado, here’s your Tico taste map:
